Tara: Welcome to Mindful School Marketing. I’m Aubrey Bursch. And I’m Tara Clays. Today we’re joined by Jenny McKee. Jenny is an astrologer with Sky Whisperers Astrology. She loves helping people align with their authentic natures and learn when the astrological energy is most supportive of their goals. She’s also been a lawyer for over 30 years.

Welcome, Jenny. 

Jenny: Hi, Tara. Hi, Aubrey. It’s such an honor to be here and I’m really excited to talk to you. Thank you. 

Aubrey: And we’re really excited to talk to you. And this is going to be a really, I think, interesting conversation. So I’m excited to dive in. But before we do that, can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your path, you know, with astrology?

Jenny: Yeah, you know, I’m an astrologer who’s really passionate about helping people reconnect with who they are really at a core nature so that they can feel more aligned that they’re living in greater alignment with whatever it is for them that brings them a sense of meaning and purpose and joy. And I also really love talking to people about when the timing may or may not be right for pursuing certain opportunities.

And you know, given my background as a practicing attorney, a lot of my clients tend to be attorneys or other professionals, people that might be seeking a little more meaning in their life or potentially a career transition. But I love speaking with people of all walks of life. And I really like to meet people where they are when it comes to astrology, whether they be total newbies or seasoned professionals.

Tara: Thank you. Yes, I was introduced to you because I had a meeting with you and that was really enlightening. So I’ll talk more about that in a bit, but let’s start out by defining astrology and what it takes to become an official astrologer. 

Jenny: Yeah. Well, astrology is the practice of, you know, studying the movements of the planets and other celestial bodies and applying them.

They’re correlating them with our lives here on earth. You may have heard there’s a quote as above so below. And I don’t believe that the planets cause what’s happening in our lives, but I do believe that they tend to reflect what’s going on for us here on earth. And there’s, you know, a mystery to that that I find really beautiful.

No one can tell you, you know, exactly why astrology works, but in my experience, it does. And there are different branches and areas of astrology. Some of them focus more on the individual somewhat focus more on world events or nations, but whatever type of astrology we’re practicing, we’re always looking at patterns and themes and how they might manifest.

Oh, and in terms of becoming an astrologer, that’s an interesting question because astrology is not a regulated industry. Although I’d be willing to bet that in a few years that might start changing. But as of now, there’s no hard, fast, hard and fast requirements that you need to meet to say you’re an astrologer.

There are certain astrological organizations that do certify people as astrologers. Additionally, there are certain astrologers will certify other people as astrologers in their astrological methods. So for example, I went through a very intensive three level program with my astrology mentor, predictive astrologer, Debra Ann Clement And as a result of that, I’m a certified astrologer of Deborah.

But as I said right now, the interesting thing is anyone can sort of call themselves an astrologer. So if somebody is interested in working with an astrologer, I would really urge them to either talk to the person or look at their website, really study it. See what their background is and also see whether their approach you know, kind of vibes with you because some people do certain things and not others.

And a lot of times an astrologer will say, if you contact them, Oh, well, that’s not my area, but I can refer you to someone else. Did that answer the question? I think. 

Aubrey: Yeah. Thank you so much. That’s very helpful. I’m curious, like speaking about, you know, areas of, you know, astrology and like, just talking about the application of astrology, you know, can you talk a little bit more about how you use it personally with your clients to help them with their career?

on life goals and plans. I think that would be really applicable for some of our school leaders. And in addition, I mean, some people might not know what a natal chart is. And yeah, maybe not know are, am I a good candidate for a reading? 

Jenny: Yeah. Yeah. It can be quite a mystery. If you’re not familiar with it, but the natal chart is pretty simple.

It’s just a map of where the planets sensitive points, other bodies were at the exact date, time and location of your birth. And your natal chart is with you. It’s paramount because it’s with you for your life. So, it’s where we start. And. Yeah. It’s really a map of themes that you’re here to explore.

It shows us certain personality traits, strengths, gifts that you may have. It also shows what areas of life might be easier or a little more challenging for you. So whenever we’re talking about an astrology reading, we want to start with the natal chart because You know, that’s fundamental. We need the context of your unique situation, your unique gifts.

But then on top of that, we can take your natal chart and apply a whole variety of timing techniques to see, you know, what kind of cycle are you in, in your life and when would, um, it be a good time or not. Such a good time to pursue something like, for example, Aubrey, you might be in a time right now where it would be a terrific time to pursue new job opportunities or think about a different educational path.

And then at the same time, Tara might be in a cycle in her life where based on her chart. It’s a more challenging time for that. And there might be a whole host of obstacles that could get in her way and just make it harder to achieve her goals. So, it’s really helpful. Just know the nature of the energy that’s going on for you and the timing of it so that you can work with it rather than against it.

You know, and in terms of career there’s a whole host of things we look at. You want to look at the chart as a whole, of course. And then there’s, you know, the 10th house, for example, is the house of career. So somebody coming in for a career reading, which I tend to get a lot of given my clients, we my eye is drawn to that the 10th house, what’s going on there?

What’s the sign on the cause things of that nature? So that gets a little bit. Technical, but in terms of who’s a good candidate for reading, you know, I would say it’s anybody who really wants to get to know themselves better. And, or who wants to know about, you know, the, the timing and the energy that we were just discussing.

And there’s such a wide variety of ways to do a reading and to approach a reading as both the client and the reader. You know, some people come in and they really want to know like deep questions. Why am I here? What’s my life purpose? You know, what am I here to explore? And it’s sort of a deep soul level.

Other people are like, well, they want to explore. Why am I attracting this kind of pattern into my life? Like the same kind of person or situation keeps showing up. And is there something that I can do to work on that, to break that pattern? And then other people are like. More like just the facts, ma’am. I just want to know, tell me you’re ahead.

Like, when should I interview for a job or when should I, you know, maybe I’ll meet that special someone, you know, and it’s all good. Everybody’s different. And, you know, like I said, I like to meet people where they are and if they want to do that deep soul dive, that’s great. And if they just want to know, like, what are the good dates for me, that’s great too.

So that was a pretty long winded answer, but hopefully, no, no, 

Tara: it was great. It sounds like fun. Actually. I mean, it, it sounds like you get to, to work with all different kinds of people who have all different reasons for coming to you, which, which must add some variety to what you do. I want to ask astrology has a lot of skeptics.

I’m old enough to remember Nancy Reagan and she had an astrologer, I remember, and she had a lot of flack for that, as I recall. I must admit that I think of myself as a quite practical person, although I’ve like met with the medium and done all these kind of things just kind of almost for fun. And I thought of astrology as being kind of woo woo, but then I had my natal chart done by you and so much of what you said resonated with me.

I was really surprised and I’ve taken it with me and really taken it to heart and And it wasn’t just kind of what you predicted for me or, or, you know, what you told me about what might be to come. It was a whole kind of story about what’s been happening to me recently. And it really fit in a lot with what I’ve been experiencing in my mindset and my view of my life.

So I, I would say I’m converted to really be fascinated as much as I am overwhelmed by the amount of information that’s there and all of the technical things that go on with astrology. The basic. Bottom line information that I kind of condensed from what you told me really resonated and I’m wondering if you hear that often if people, I was given a gift certificate to to meet with you.

And so it wasn’t something that I had would probably otherwise have explored. So I’m wondering you know, if you hear that from people and, you know, if you feel like you convert people or if they’re already believers when they come to you. 

Jenny: Yeah, no, that’s so interesting. And that’s, that’s really heartwarming to me that, you know, kind of resonated with you.

And you’re right. There are a ton of astrology skeptics. There are people who are outright hostile to astrology and that’s fine. You know, I mean, I’m not here to try and convert people, you know, everybody has their interests and things that they’re not into. That’s fine. But that is interesting because a lot of times when people get a gift certificate, sometimes they’re like, Ooh, like.

What is this? I’m not sure I really want that or, or maybe I’m kind of curious, but like, what in the world is this about? Like, and and there is that but I have had clients who really have had like aha moments or like are completely blown away. And they’re like, wait, how in the world do you know that about me from looking at this piece of paper with my birth data, which, you know, that’s always very gratifying to me.

And so I’m like I said, I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed it. But in terms of the woo woo, you know, stereotype that is obviously very true. A lot of people think that, but fun fact is that astrology done right, like, really, like, meaningfully is a lot of analysis, a lot of technical detail and including math.

You know, so in my mind, it’s really like a beautiful balance of that. Which way is it left brain analysis and right brain intuition. It’s a really nice balance of that. Um, and I mean, I guess one thing I think, given my background as an attorney, I, I, I tend to be able to relate or have a rapport with people who don’t necessarily view themselves as view because, you know, or as woo, I do have a background in like working with corporate type people, so that that can help, but you know, there’s so many different styles of astrologers really.

You just have to find what, what works for you. 

Aubrey: Thanks so much. I’m curious, like, you know, as you’re working with clients you know, and perhaps as a result of like this self discovery that they’re, you know, Coming to during this process, you know, what kind of changes have you seen occur? I’m, I’m particularly thinking of our audience who work in schools and are committed to helping their schools maintain and grow enrollment so they can help children learn and grow, you know, what might they discover?

Jenny: Oh, I mean, I have seen So such tremendous results with some of my clients, you know, some of them have just quit their jobs and changed fields and things like that, but it doesn’t have to be necessarily that, you know, dramatic, I mean, what’s really gratifying to me is sometimes you just see the light bulb go off over someone’s head and they, you can tell that maybe for the first time in their life, they feel a part of them feels validated and seen, you know, and I, I think sometimes people generally know what’s going on.

What’s what’s right for them or what what they want to be doing, but sometimes they need sort of an outside person to come in and say I see you and what you’re feeling is, is valid and here’s why we can even see it in your chart and here’s why and. You know, I think sometimes even though people know what they want to do, sometimes they want that like permission slip to, to make a change they want to make.

But in terms of schools, I mean, honestly, there are such practical applications to this and I kind of wish astrology, basic astrology was taught like in high school. You know, because even from the position of a school professional, if, if the teachers and administrators knew, for example, the moon placements of each of their students, it would open up like this whole new world of like, how do we relate to them?

How do we make them feel safe? How do we make them feel engaged? Because Interestingly, in astrology, like the sun, it represents our identity, and among other things the moon represents what we need to feel emotionally fulfilled, safe, and secure. And kids, especially up to age seven, but even through high school, they tend to relate more or identify more with their moon sign because the sun is something we kind of grow into over our lifetime.

So knowing that, would make such a difference. And then even, even among the adults in a school, not only in a school, but including in a school, you know, if we all knew, for example, the Mercury sign of the people we’re working with every day, or our, our spouses, you know, anyone we’re interacting with that once again, would be a game changer because, you know, Mercury is the planet in astrology of communication and mindset, right?

So if we all knew each other’s Mercury signs, we would know like Oh, so that’s why that person is always super critical. Mercury in Virgo, or that’s why that person seems to shoot their mouths off and maybe speak without thinking first. Mercury in Aries, potentially, or that person seems to make decisions based a lot more in emotion than in logic.

Mercury in Cancer, right? And so astrology really is like a really good building block for building teams, it’s as really like practical applications, just. using it to see personality traits in people. So that’s just one example. 

Tara: It’s so interesting. We we’ve, we’ve had an enneagram person on our podcast and we had someone recently who talked about working genius, which is another sort of assessment.

And I would be. Fascinated to see how these things overlap. Right? See if what you’re saying about personality that comes from your astrological sign or your astrological chart, how that compares to what these other assessments determine. I would, I would hope and imagine that they, that they are similar or that they would say something similar.

That’s so fascinating. But you know, but with the other things, I was going to say with the other things you have to answer questions in order to get that assessment. But with this, you, you’re not, you’re not having any input at all, except for the facts of your birth. 

Jenny: Yeah, yeah, you do need the, well, you generally need the exact time, which sometimes not ever usually it’s on the birth certificate.

You can’t sometimes sometimes you can’t find it without the exact time we can still derive a lot of information, but the moon. Yeah. will be off, could be off, and the houses will be off. But you can still get a lot of information. Another modality that’s based only on that another kind of woo woo wood, is that human design.

I don’t know if you’ve heard of that, but which incorporates astrology and some other things as well. Yeah. 

Tara: Yeah, so interesting. Also, I was thinking about your comment about high schoolers and the first time I really was made aware of this natal chart information was I, I mentor high school students and a couple of years ago, the student I was mentoring was really into it.

And then I discovered that my kids were also really into it when they were in high school and that it’s something that That teachers probably wouldn’t have to do a lot to determine because these kids already have like the Cosign app on their phone or something that 

Jenny: has 

Tara: already told them this, right?

I have had friends who have been, you know, we’ve been out somewhere and they get a text from their kids saying, Mom, what time was I born? And you’re like, I know why you’re asking that. Exactly. So yeah, that’s a really fun idea. That would be a fun activity for high school high school to do or middle school.

Yeah. Love it. 

Jenny: Yeah. And it is becoming a lot more mainstream and you might hear like the kids might say, what’s your big three? And that just means sun and rising sun. Yeah. Yeah. 

Tara: So cool. This is really interesting. So through the length of our podcast, we talk about mindfulness and how it applies to people who work in schools to our audience.

How do you define mindfulness, Jenny, and how does it relate, would you say, to this astrological information? 

Jenny: Yeah, that’s an interesting question. I would define mindfulness as Kind of trying to clear out the mental noise and mental clutter and really kind of ground down into our bodies and see what resonates as true kind of energetically.

And astrology is really beautiful for that kind of mindfulness because as we’ve discussed a little mu a little bit. It can really help us get down to the core of who we are once we sort of strip away the conditioning and the expectations of family and society. And so in astrology reading, you know, if, if, if, And it’s inclined can really be like a sacred container for getting into that state of mindfulness and figuring out, you know, who am I really?

And how is it that I want to live? 

Tara: Yeah, do you hear back from people after some of these readings that they take action as a result of? of what they’ve learned. 

Jenny: Yeah, you know, some do. I, I don’t always know. I always send people the recording afterwards because sometimes, you know, yours, I think was a, one of the shorter readings, the full like year ahead needle with a year ahead, that’s 90 minutes.

And that can be a lot, especially when you’re like throwing dates at people like for a whole year. And so, I always send them an according and a lot of people report. Yeah, I did. I went back and I listened to it and then I wrote down stuff on my calendar for when to expect things. And but yeah, no, I do hear like, it really gave me a shift in perspective or it gave me a sense of validation or sense of permission.

And, you know, some people. Pull the trigger earlier than others on, on making changes. Some people just like to use it as sort of guideposts for, you know, because not everyone is looking to make a massive change. They just kind of want to use the information. So it just depends on the person. 

Tara: Yeah, I just have one more question that popped in my head, which is how horoscopes relate to this.

Jenny: Oh, you mean like the things in the paper? Yeah, those are fine. They’re there’s fine as far as they go. But I mean, essentially, they’re based, they’re based on placing the sun on the on the right on the ascendant on the rising sign, essentially doing a forecast based on, you know, Really each, each signs, rising sign.

And so it’s, it’s very, it’s fine. It’s it’s legit. It’s valid, but it’s pretty general, right? So if I would advise, if you’re going to look at those, I would look, if you know, your rising sign, I would look at your rising sign. You can look at your sun sign as well, but unless your son is right ascendant, it’s not necessarily going to be as accurate.

So, It’s fine, but I, you know, if you really want to know what’s going on with you, then a more an astrology reading geared towards your chart is obviously going to be more, more helpful, 

Tara: but they’re fine and the right, the rising sign comes from your natal chart. Or is there a way how do you? 

Jenny: Okay.

Yeah, it’s like what sign was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment you were born in the exact place you were born. So that’s why we were saying that the exact time is important because if you don’t have that, then we don’t have the rising. And so from there is where all the 12 houses start.

So it sort of is the marker that lays out. You know, how the, how the needle chart is laid out, but we would still know, you know, even if we don’t have the exact time, like the aspects between the planets and the signs of all the planets, except potentially the moon would be the same. So, we can still work with it 

Tara: and there are there are apps that will tell you this, too.

If someone wanted to go on, listen, isn’t inspired. There are some apps where you can go on and put in that information. It’ll tell you you’re rising sign. 

Jenny: Yes. And you can also go to astro. com which is free. It’s great website and it’s free actually on my website. I have on my blog directions for how someone can follow the steps on there and pull up their own chart.

Aubrey: Some of us need other other ways to engage for sure. Thank you so much. Those are some great tips. I am really excited to transfer like to transition to our rapid fire questions. There’s some really fun questions and I’m excited. I, I rarely get to ask this one, so I’m excited because it’s one of Sarah and I’s favorite questions.

If you could put one book. As mandatory reading in the high school curriculum. What would it be? 

Jenny: Oh, yes. I have it. I have it right here. This is a brilliant astrology book. A straw. I don’t know if you can see it astrology using the wisdom of the stars in your everyday life by Carol Taylor. I think I’ve recommended this to you, Tara, but.

It’s a great, I love it because it’s very comprehensive, but yet it’s also quite accessible to the beginner. And on top of that, it’s really beautiful. It’s, you know, you can see the bright colors on the cover. It’s got great graphics. The layout’s great. So anybody who’s kind of astro curious, that would be a great place to start.

And I think, you know, as we were saying, like, if they had this in the library in high school, if just everybody got that really basic fundamental knowledge about their own chart, I think we would all be a lot better off. 

Tara: Yeah, cool. All right, here we go back to the apps. Good one for me. What is one app you could not live without?

Jenny: Yeah. Well, you know, there are, as we’ve discussed a little bit, there’s so many great astrology apps, but I’m going to have to go with one that has nothing to do with astrology, which is calm, which probably everyone has heard of, but I just love, you know, we can just turn to it and get grounded. And I love the guide, the structure of the guided meditation.

So that’s, that’s my fav. 

Aubrey: Great. And what are you reading right now? 

Jenny: Oh, well, you know, I have my son in the ninth house in Gemini, so I’m always learning, always a student, so I’ve always got a couple books going on. Right now I’m actually rereading a fantastic astrology book by one, another of my astrology mentors evolutionary astrologer Tom Jacobs, and it’s called Lilith, L I L I T H, Healing the Wild.

It’s an astrology the instinctual feminine or the suppressed feminine. And I’m also reading very different book, but fiction really sizzling hot romance novel set in Paris with a lawyer turned writer it’s called angel eyes and it’s by a debut. Author, lawyer turned author named Ellie Jennings.

And so those are both obviously really different folks, but I recommend them both. 

Tara: Oh, fun. I love it. Good time for summer. A steamy romance. Our last rapid fire question is what one great piece of advice would you like to leave us with today? 

Jenny: Yeah, I mean, I would say I would just encourage all of us to give ourselves some grace.

And to realize that we’re all, we’re all kind of learning as we go, as we walk through life and that we don’t have to fit into boxes that other people have created for us. And, you know, there’s a lot of difficult things going on right now in the world, but I, I really do feel like if we, if each person does our, you know, quote, unquote, inner work and really tries to get aligned with, you know, What’s fundamentally true for us, as opposed to what everyone else is telling us should be true for us, that the world would be a better place and we would be better off.

happier and more fulfilled as we walk down our life path.
